Beshar Al Azzawi
imad - January 15, 2021I’m an Iraqi born, German citizen permanently residing in the USA. I’ve lived in many countries and I finally felt home in California. Apart from composing and infusing different genres, I sing, produce, play guitar and Oud, with intensive experience in cross cultural music.
Beshar was born in Baghdad in June 1970. His love for art in general and music in particular, started since his childhood, empowered by his uncle Riyadh Al Khayat (a brilliant painter now living in Sweden). Riyadh use to take Beshar to theatre plays, ballet shows and to the Academy of Fine Arts where Riyadh worked as a lecturer. Riyadh’s role and the passion for music Beshar’s father had, influenced Basher’s connection to music.
Beshar got his first instrument “a violin” by the age of four. He had to break it though claiming “he wants to see what’s inside this thing, that makes it function” something he often did with his other toys as well.
When he became 16 he was old enough to take care of his first Guitar and 6 months later, he started jamming with his friends in high school. By 1988 he graduated from High school. For social reason and to satisfy his family, he joined the University of Baghdad to study Civil Engineering. Five years later, Beshar graduated holding B.Sc. Degree in Civil Engineering, and then he left to Jordan where he started his professional career as a musician and singer, performing a One Man Show in restaurants, and pubs.
During the period 1994 – 2001, he established himself in Jordan for his unique performances ranging from Spanish Gipsy songs and music, to old traditional Iraqi music. While Jordan was his temporary home country, Beshar had the experience of living and working in other places such as Dubai in the UAE. He performed live on JORDAN Fm Radio and was interviewed on Jordanian television on more than one occasion. He also participated in charity concerts and events sponsored by the Royal Family in Jordan on many occasions at venues as the Royal Cultural Centre and participated in an International concert sponsored by Queen Rania of Jordan.
In 2001, and after his record deal with MBI “Music Box International”, Beshar moved to Europe and started a new experience. He participated in several events and concerts in Belgium, Italy, the UK and Germany with different musicians from Spain, Brazil, The Middle east and Belgium. He found those experiences to be very inspiring and enriching. This culminated in his new style of music that he called ‘NuName’. For this purpose, he learnt and introduced new instruments as the clarinet, saxophone, and percussion to his work. This allowed his music compositions and productions to go beyond the conventional definitions of Music genre. On this matter beshar says: “The ‘NuName’ contains a multitude of musical performances and different styles/genre combined together. This is a school of music where one element of style can react and melt with another to produce a new one. In other words, you allow more freedom by combining these fundamentals while maintaining their own character.”
In 2010 and after residing in Germany for a decade, Beshar went to the United States and produced a music project with the American-Persian singer Sepideh Vahidi. The Project was featured on BBC Farsi in London in 2012.
Following that, in 2013 Beshar and Sepideh were featured by the Morgenland Chamber Orchestra in Osnabruck Germany, an event that was a huge success.
In 2013 Beshar moved to the United States and founded HiJAZZ Band and Project. A concept focused on adopting jazz elements and flavors combined with both acoustic and electric Oud (fretless guitar). HiJAZZ first album was released in October 18, 2015
